SOY CONTAINING ISOFLAVONES AND PLASMA LIPIDS: A RANDOMIZED DOUBLE-BLIND PLACEBO-CONTROLLED TRIAL. S. Kreijkamp-Kaspers, L. Kok, D.E. A meta-analysis comprising 38 intervention studies with soy protein naturally containing isoflavones found a 9.3% decrease in total cholesterol and a 12.9 % decrease in LDL cholesterol, which has resulted in the health claim approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that diets low in saturated fats and cholesterol that include 25 g d soy protein may reduce the risk of heart disease. Our goal was to investigate whether the improvement in plasma lipids seen with soy protein containing isoflavones can be extrapolated to postmenopausal women.
