However, at the Road Kill Upside Down Rigaine in February this year, we realized that this wasn't going to happen - the State Champs were in August, not June, and that was when Paul expected to be overseas. A week later at our AGM Warren Smith announced that he was still looking for setters for the June 2004 event. Paul immediately volunteered and persuaded me to help. As competitors we all appreciate the value of good tracks, but for setters they are especially important. Since it turned out that practically the entire course was easily accessible by vehicle, the die was cast. By Easter we had prepared our first map and had taped all the controls, and then it was up to the vetters, Bushy and Mole. Although they were novices, they did a thoroughly professional job, with each of them visiting and checking all 72 controls. They found a few mistakes and made some excellent suggestions for improving the layout of the course. These were taken on board, and by the beginning of May the course was ready with a month to spare. After a long, dry autumn, the weather finally broke a day or so before the event. On the Friday night, it bucketed down in Perth, but those who were camping around the hash house were spared the worst. The skies were threatening again on Saturday morning, and although the weather forecast was ominous the rain seemed to hold off. However not long after the event got underway, a severe wind squall passed through, and this resulted in several of the admin staff rushing around trying to rescue various bubble tents that had sprung loose and were cartwheeling across the camping area. It was a shame the cameraman wasn't around to capture the action on video! The rain continued to hold off for the rest of the afternoon, but in the evening there were a couple of rather heavy showers. This was enough to encourage most teams to return to hash house for a good feed and a warm-up by the fire. In fact, later on during the night there were only a dozen teams out on the course; the rest of the 150 teams who entered the event were taking it easy around the blazing fire or were safely tucked up in bed. On Sunday morning most teams ventured out again in overcast but dry conditions, and all made it back by midday for yet another feed and to hear the results. Nearly everybody seemed to have had a good time, and that, after all, is what it is all about. Most were quite satisfied with the course, but it wasn't perfect, which we now admit after being persuaded that control 36 was in the wrong gully. But heh, that just gives us room for improvement next time! The administration and hash house staff maintained the usual high standards that we are tempted to take for granted. But this doesn't just happen, and comes about through the efforts of many dedicated people. If we were to single out just one of these it would be the admin leader Paul Harrison the elder! ; , who seemed to be one step ahead of everybody at all times. Thanks Paul, and we are even prepared to forgive you for stealing so much of our fire! It wasn't until quite late on Sunday afternoon that Paul and I were able to head off home. Victorian Rogaining Championships 27-28 October 2007 Glenburn, 1hr north of Melbourne The 32nd Victorian Rogaining Championships were held near Glenburn approximately one hour drive north of Melbourne. This is the site of a number of successful 24-hour university and intervarsity rogaines especially in the 1970s, and is an interesting mix of forest and open farm country. The area has not been used for 24-hour rogaines for several years and the 2007 event represents a start to re-entering this area for major rogaining events. Glenburn has been recognized by the Victorian Rogaining Association as one of its priority 24-hour rogaining sites. First rogaine in Finland report By Sergey Yaschenko, IRF Member First of all I would like to thank the organizers of the RETKI rogaine - they have demonstrated a very good understanding of the ideals of rogaining and did not turn it into a 24 hour ultra-long orienteering event. It was a very good rogaine; the course demanded both good navigation skills and wise strategic decisions. Iiro Kakko ; , it was also my pleasure to meet you in person and compete against your team: I have heard a lot about you and we had had some communication via e-mail some time ago. But it is always great to meet people and have an opportunity to compete together and discuss things. For those who were not able to come: both the organizational aspects and the competitive part of the Finnish rogaine were of a very high level. I would definitely recommend this event to everyone. In my opinion this organizing team is capable of holding the European championships in accordance with the high IRF standards.
